What the same fridge costs by state

The $0.175/kWh used above is a national average that almost nobody pays exactly. Residential rates in 2026 run from 12.35¢/kWh in North Dakota to 46.62¢/kWh in Hawaii (EIA residential rate data) — a 3.8× spread. Same fridge, same kWh, a very different bill. 6 ways to cut fridge electricity

  1. Set fridge to 37 °F / freezer to 0 °F. Each degree colder = 4–6% more energy.
  2. Vacuum the condenser coils annually. Dusty coils raise energy use 10–25%.
  3. Keep it full but not packed. Cold mass holds temperature; airflow can't be blocked.
  4. Check door gaskets. If a dollar bill slides out when closed, replace the seal ($25).
  5. Skip the ice/water dispenser model if not essential — those models use 14–20% more.
  6. Unplug the garage backup fridge. Especially if it's pre-2005.

  1. Pricing at the national average. Rates span 12.35¢ (North Dakota) to 46.62¢/kWh (Hawaii) — a 3.8× spread. A payback that looks like 14 years at $0.175 is 7 years in New England and 20+ years in the Plains states. Always run your own rate; it's the top line of your bill.
  2. Multiplying nameplate watts × 24 hours. The compressor cycles on and off; a fridge that draws 150 W while running does not draw 150 W around the clock. That method overestimates by roughly 3×. Use the Energy Guide annual kWh instead — it already includes duty cycle and defrost.
  3. Treating the old fridge as free because "it's already paid for." The purchase price is sunk either way; the running cost isn't. A 1990s spare costs $173–$653/yr depending on state — that's the number to judge, not the $0 you'd spend to keep it.
