About · Updated May 2026

The honest energy reference for households.

Watt Guide exists to answer one boring, decisive question: what does this actually cost me? No installer pitch, no affiliate-ranking trick, no inflated lifetime-savings hype. Just the math, sourced from public datasets and updated when those datasets change.

What "independent" means here: No installer or manufacturer pays for placement. Rankings come from public testing data and our own metered measurements. The site is supported by Google AdSense and a thin layer of clearly-labelled affiliate links to mass retailers — neither influences which products top the rankings.
Editorial principles

Numbers over opinions

Every claim about cost or savings is tied to a public dataset — EIA, Ofgem, NREL, Eurostat, CRU, AER — or a manufacturer spec sheet. If we can't source it, we don't print it.

Methodology

Real-world testing

Wattage and usage numbers are measured with metered plugs in a real home before publishing. No "manufacturer claims" without verification.

Freshness

Quarterly tariff refresh

Country and state-average rates refreshed every quarter. Every guide reviewed at least every 6 months. The publish date is the date the article was last verified.

Anti-rules

What we never do

No pay-for-placement. No affiliate-pressure rankings. No "lifetime savings" assuming 8% utility inflation. No vendor screenshots passed off as test results. No anonymous editorial team — every guide is a person you can email.

Where the numbers come from

Every cost in the site traces back to one of these sources. Each pillar article cites them inline.

How Watt Guide pays for itself

Watt Guide is funded by two streams, in this order of importance:

  1. Contextual ads served by Google AdSense. Ads are auctioned in real time based on page content. We have no relationship with the advertisers.
  2. Affiliate links to major retailers on a small subset of articles. When present they are clearly labelled and never determine which products are recommended.

Nothing on this site is sponsored content. Nothing is paid placement. When you read a comparison ranking, the order reflects our reading of the public testing data and our own measurements — nothing else.
